1880 takes its name from the decade its Devonport site was first built on: a modest workers' cottage that needed to grow up around a young family without losing what made it worth keeping. The brief was shaped as much by constraint as by ambition, a narrow site and heritage planning controls meant every square metre of the extension had to be argued for, and every material choice had to answer to the cottage that was already there.

The result draws its material language directly from the original building, extending it rather than replacing it. Inside, well-lit living spaces open fully to a run of outdoor areas around the site, giving the family room to spread out, gather, or retreat as they grow, the kind of flexibility a single-generation cottage was never built to offer, added without pretending the cottage was never there.
